In the IKEA experience, customers know they are served by a cost structure reflective of a frugal and accountable culture. It’s one that emanates from the core of its founder, a billionaire who still “opts to grocery shop in the afternoon when prices are lower, encourages IKEA employees to use both sides of paper when writing, and flies economy class.”113

We go to IKEA to buy the equivalent of well-designed cheap cars, not Mercedes, knowing we can spend the savings on something else. The ethos of quality and frugality that drives furniture pieces into flat boxes, and the cost savings on to the consumer, deserves a place in the health care equation.

Imagine my father’s hospital had to present the bill for his “care” not to a government bureaucracy, but to my grieving mother. Do you really believe that the hospital—forced to face the victim of its poor-quality service, forced to collect the bill from the real customer—wouldn’t have figured out how to make its doctors wash their hands?
